Art Deco Antics

This weekend saw the annual Art Deco Weekend take place in Napier, Hawkes Bay.  It actually runs for 5 days but it is the weekend when the majority of events take place.

With so many of Central Napier's buildings rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake, the architecture trend of the era was 'Art Deco' and hence much of the inner city was built in this style.

Every Art Deco Weekend, Napier appears to go back in time with 40,000 people from all around the country (and world) coming to attend the many free and ticketed events including the Vintage Car Parade, Bathing Belles, Beach Banquet, Black Tie Ball, Depression Dinner, Saturday Street Party, Billy Cart Derby Races, Gatsby Picnic and more.  Many immerse themselves in the time by dressing in Art Deco style and the town truly is a sight to behold.

Some of the sights we saw at Art Deco Weekend 2010
The Art of the time was bold with lots of geometric lines and colour and the jewellery - divine!

  1. Yes, we love it too! A great event! The Gatsby picnic along Marine Parade is so amazing with everyone making sure to be dressed up, at least with a head band or a hat or if lucky to have, with a fur piece! Great fun to walk past and to check out the old cars! There is something for everyone!
