Who is Ginger Pye?
Ginger Pye is a small business started up by “mumpreneur” sisters Nicola and Julia. Stay-at-home mums with 4 children between us, we live in the great south of New Zealand (sunny Dunedin, that is).
Nicola’s creative flair was the catalyst to start the business — after a number of people enquired where her fabulous homemade sandwich wraps hailed from, we decided to offer them to the public. We put our heads together, and are now producing a range of wraps to suit every taste, combining haute couture with environmental friendliness!
What’s your “handmade groove ?”
We love to make things that have an environmentally friendly quality, reusable or made from recycled materials – currently sandwich wraps are where it’s at for us!
What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)
Nicola: a continually growing pile of books that I can never catch up on!
Julia: started out as a tidy adult’s bedside table with phone, lamp and book, but has gradually been overcome by picture books, tissues, booties and other kids paraphernalia!!
Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?
Nicola says her faves are www.thepioneerwoman.com and various crafty blogs from around the world. Julia would like to name Michael Jackson as her general inspiration for everything (note from Nicola: tee hee, she’s serious!)
What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?
A good chat about self-sufficiency ie. chickens and gardening, along with a few capitalist-inspired dreams of making millions in a totally ethical and environmentally friendly manner :)
If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?
A small business management course would be super useful at this stage. Or a learning to crochet course for a bit of fun. And what about a Michael Jackson comeback concert anyone…?
How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?
Hmmm, not always well! Everything gets done when it can – often at the very last minute :) The kids help in their own ways which can be more or less useful…
What is your favourite creative screw-up?
We created some great new bright pink fabrics recently when washing a batch of new (pale) fabrics and mistakenly including a non-colourfast bright red! Luckily the patterns were very forgiving and some ended up better than before!
Kitchen table or studio?
Dining room table and the desk in the lounge.
Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?
World domination – a world where every lunch is wrapped in a Ginger Pye sandwich wrap, and stories of gladwrapped sandwiches are just a distant nightmare :)
Wow, what cool lunch wraps, you are indeed clever sisters. cheers Marie
