A Conversation with Gill of JacBer Creations

There is something about Gill of JacBer's crochet creations that just make me smile - it's not just the beautiful 'kitschness' of her toilet roll covers and teapot cosies, it's the humour and fun that seems infused in everything she makes not to mention the fabulous colour combinations.  Here, Gill tells us more about the what inspires her to make and create...

Who is JacBer Creations?
Hi I’m Gill

What’s your “handmade groove ?”
Anything crochet. Anything crochet that is 70’s inspired, Anything crochet that is a granny square. Yeah, anything crochet.

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)
Tissues (I get allergic to the air in the morning and sneeze lots) a crochet hook and yarn and a copper cup for my morning water drink (it’s a very ‘good for you’ thing from India) a book about the writers who have visited Australia over the years and what their impressions were

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?
I’d love to say Audrey Hepburn because she is so cool and sophisticated, in reality though it’s more the creative books/mags from the 70’s. I follow heaps of creative blogs and love to read where people get their inspiration from. And I have strange dreams some times that inspire me too.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?
80’s music, books and Sci-fi,

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?
I want to go to a felt workshop run by a lady in Te Aroha and learn to make felt & also a felt rose & bag (that’s 2 different workshops they’re not free though - stink) . I didn’t know we had free workshops in NZ :)

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?
I don’t have children so I only have me and the fella to worry about. Easy to balance – crochet is so portable I just take it everywhere (I made a couple of pairs of slippers waiting in traffic) and he is so supportive I just let him know if I need a creative day :). The only worry I have is if the cats decide they are kittens (they are 14) and want to play with the yarn.

What is your favourite creative screw-up?
I have so many! My total fav though is a series of amigurumi robots which I thought were incredibly cool (and still do) and no-one else in the world thinks they are :).

Kitchen table or studio?
Ahhhh portable crochet! I have a space to store yarn in the office and carry it around with me everywhere, no need for a special space

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?
I wish that someone would go “wow Gill, you make cool things I’ll give you loads of money to make things for my shop” isn’t that normal?

I wish to work part time and crochet more

I want to learn tatting – first I wish to have patience with the fiddly bits

Sorry guys - if you were keen on these fingerless gloves - I just bought 'em!  But I'm sure Gill would make some just for you :)
