“handmade 2011” - craft symposium at Te Papa in Wellington

Queen’s Birthday weekend - a long weekend?
Well, there was certainly not enough time to participate in every workshop or to be part of all the talks or demonstrations offered at “handmade 2011”, a meeting of crafters from around the country.

For me both days were filled being a tutor of full-day workshops titled “Design and Create Silver Treasures”, teaching two groups of very nice people how to create rings, pendants and earrings from precious metal clay.

Accomplished and confident in other handcraft areas, for some it was the first time making jewellery- not to speak of any previous experience with “Art Clay Silver”, the medium used in my workshops.

After finding the right size everyone started to work on their ring designs.
While the the various parts for the rings were drying ideas started to flow for more jewellery pieces.

It didn’t take long for them to take shape and the remainder of the provided silver clay was used to create pendants and earrings.

Look at the results, aren’t their silver pieces stunning?

Saturday evening a number of tutors involved in “handmade 2011” set up stalls at the “Meet the Makers” party in the foyer of Te Papa.
With wine and plentiful cheese platters available, ticket holders could round off their busy day by talking to the tutors and purchasing items on offer.

Mark your 2012 calendar for next year’s “handmade” event on Queen’ Birthday weekend in Wellington, you don’t want to miss it!
