A Conversation with Jocelyn of NewcreatioNZ

Wow!  I have just returned from a visit to Jocelyn of NewCreatioNZ Etsy Shop.  Next time I'm taking a coffee and a biscuit or three with me because I was there for a while!!  Jocelyn is passionate about colour and nature and translates her love of vivid colour and form through her photography, painting and craftwork creating a comprehensive range of products where you truly will find something for everyone.  Here's an insight into Jocelyn's creative world...

Who is NewCreatioNZ?
Jocelyn Friis

What’s your “handmade groove ?”
Though my passions are painting and photography, I get a buzz in finding practical ways to use my paintings and prints. The result is that I am constantly busy making a variety of handmades, such as cards, magnets, coasters, stationery, jewelry, packaging boxes and more!

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)
Tissue box, lip balm (handmade), lamp, Bible, note pad and pencil, my love box (a place for the family to drop little love notes in – they have a box in their rooms too) and the inevitable: dust!

Who are your creative role models?
What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire? I get a lot of inspiration from the amazing New Zealand scenery. I feel so fortunate to live close to the sea and absolutely love the beach. I also love to page through craft books and magazines.

This is a quote I love: "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." Pablo Picasso

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?
Anything creative, God, teenagers. And the above quote.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?
Contemporary painting, photography, and I have really been wanting to try lamp working.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?
Not sure that I have achieved the perfect balance yet. I work 9-3 weekdays so grab what ever time I can get to create and still make time for the children, not to mention dinner, housework....and hubby! In fact I am open to suggestions on how to balance all that successfully!

What is your favourite creative screw-up?
Well, there have been plenty when it comes to painting. If I am not happy with a painting, I keep going with it to try improve it but inevitably make it worse. When I realize its just not going to work, I white it all out and start afresh!

Kitchen table or studio?
Dining room table (no table in the kitchen)

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?
More space! I like to be near the family when I am working on something so don't necessarily need a separate studio but just more room to spread myself out, like a huge work table plus a myriad of shelves to store my gear. Ok, yes, I do want a studio. The other thing I would love is to be able to earn enough from my art to be able to give up my 'day job'.
