A Conversation with Jude of Ruby Jude

For those already familiar with Jude of 'Ruby Jude' 's work you will know her passion is Mixed Media Art creation specialising in collage techniques which utilise depth and colour to express messages with true meaning and feeling. Jude uses vintage papers, buttons, stamps, postcards, quotes and more in her work and here, shares with us some of her creative thoughts...
Who is Ruby Jude?

Ruby Jude is the name I paint under, Jude Howker being my real name.

What’s your “handmade groove ?

My dance at the moment is with colour, paper, texture, paints, scissors, glue, pens to name a few. As a mixed media artist I really get to play by the way of touch, I get dirty, I shape and form papers, I begin to remember what it was like when I was a little girl. Mixing mediums is the most thrilling and adventuresome type of art, because you get many unexpected surprises of color and texture. Every time you add something new to a collage it reassembles itself and responds back. It’s a conversation between artist and art. It fun and it bring me freedom.

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

Flowers, Lamp, Angel of Patience, Clock, White lantern holding a Tea Light and a book called “I dare you” by Joyce Meyer

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

Now this is the hardest of all because I seem to get inspired wherever with whatever. The sun, beach, waves, feelings of acceptance, looking with love at my baby she’s bringing out a lot of hidden creativity. The old masters, Whistler, Monet, Holman Hunt, modern artists like Donna Downey, Melody Ross. Whilst painting music is always playing, Van Morrison, Worship Music, Eva Cassidy and Classical, they all seem to bring about a calm peaceful grace.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Dreams, Love, God, Peace, Philosophy and creating, the act of laying down your inner artist in your work.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

Ohhh this is a hard one cause there are so many to choose from here goes ……..would love to attend Art is You in Sydney Australia, The Brave Girls Club retreat in America, online classes would be Artful gathering and A mixed media class called Piety and Passion.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

Pray, pray and pray. God seems to still the time when I do that and everything just falls into place. Though, sometimes it all gets a bit topsy turvy as I have three children all at different ages and stages. But at the moment my 22mnth old still has a lovely long sleep during the day that’s when I get to play!

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

Not sure it’s my favourite but it’s a big screw up, deleting images of an original painting that I have already sold and will probably never see again. She is lost out there singing songs on some body’s wall.

Kitchen table or studio?

A lovely sunny spot at a Kitchen table bought about 23 years ago placed under the window and in our garage!!! LOVE IT There…it is my space.

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

Without a doubt to

Love Well

Forgive always

Laugh Loud

Dream Big and accomplish most dreams before I die!!

And then get a pass into Heaven, hearing the words well done.

Short term and rather simple…………book a holiday and get my hair cut
