A Conversation with Sandy Densem - Artist

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of being Sandy's stall neighbour at the local 'Havelock North Art and Craft Market'.  With a lovely staggered height display, her beautiful silk and cotton fabric pieces featuring scarfs, cushion covers and table cloths were a gorgeously colourful and tactile sight to behold as they moved in the breeze.  It was only later that I learned that Sandy Densem is a very accomplished artist of international repute with a passion for mixed media, painting and textiles.  Here, Sandy shares a glimpse into her creative world...

Who is Sandy Densem - Artist?

Sandy Densem

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

Individually hand painted fabrics, table cloths, table runners, cushion covers. Each cloth is like a huge water colour painting.

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

A jar of pens, emory boards, and lipsticks; specs; the book I am reading is Carravaggio ; and a bedside light

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

I love the colours and brush marks of the post Impressionists; enjoy Classical music especially in my studio; colours in nature, spring and autumn especially, as well as winter trees are the things that inspire me.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Creating, colour, textures, books, artists, spirituality

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

Wellington Affordable Arts, just to see who is doing what; the Oxford Craft and Arts market, UK for the same reason; and the Wearable Arts as I haven’t yet seen it.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

My kids have flown the coop and live in the Uk so my time belongs to me, also have an incredibly supportive husband who believes in what I do!

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

Bad photos that translate into Mixed media

Kitchen table or studio?

Studio

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

Just want to be recognized for the effort and hard work and skill that I put into all of my work. And of course I would love to live in Tuscany, paint wonderful things eat gorgeous food and drink the wine. Is that too much to ask?
