A Conversation with Saskia of saskia.n Designs

Have you heard of Resin Casting?  Well it's something that Saskia of saskia.n Designs knows (and does) very, very well.  An intricate process involving time and patience to individually cast and sand each item.  Saskia crafts beautiful pieces inspired by nostalgia, New Zealand, kiwiana and a love for the environment and living things.  Here, she tells us more...

Who is saskia.n Designs?
Saskia Nickless

What’s your “handmade groove ?”
Resin Jewellery

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)
Hardanger embroidered doily, deodorant, iPod Dock and iPod, trinkets box, rosehip oil, old teacup, Lucas papaw tube, coaster, water bottle, Boris (teddy bear) and a wee porcelain lady to pop lavender oil in. (Wow I have a lot….)

Who are your creative role models?
What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire? Extra Curricular, World Sweet World, stamps, The Eastern, Jane Austen and Hayao Miyazaki.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?
Teaching, politics, cooking… ha! How boring…

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?
Semi-permanent, re-opening of Auckland Art Gallery and any printmaking workshop.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?
I spend mainly “TV” time working on my jewellery, I do try make time to bake or cook something slightly more exciting.

What is your favourite creative screw-up?
Putting a Silver coin into resin, it reacted and made the resin go brown!

Kitchen table or studio?
I work on the top of the clothes dryer, coffee table in the lounge and sometimes the kitchen bench, the worst thing is I do have a studio…

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?
Yes! I love too many things… I would LOVE a Print Gocco machine, a mac book, a bureau… there is just so much more!
