A Conversation with Olivia of LiTtle WoRm

Quirky, fun and intriguing are the words that immediately spring to mind when view Olivia of LiTtle WoRm's creations.  Here, she shares with us, a glimpse into her creative world...

Who is LiTtle WoRm?

Well, LiTtle WoRm is an expression of me but it's not all of me. I am an Auckland crafter, jeweller and painter. The LiTtle WoRm brand encompasses various collections of jewellery, toys and accessories. I am the sole maker and designer behind all things LiTtle WoRm

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

A perfectly dysfunctional mix of country cottage meets unsettling grunge. I love all things floral, quaint, crocheted and white linen, at the same time as severed animal heads, dripping paint, congealed painting mediums, dysfigured natural objects, the bones of small animals and general dirt.

What’s on your bedside table right now?

Lots of pens, journals, ideas books and general stationary. Always at least three crochet hooks, Kurt Cobain journals, ear drops, too much dust, floral photo frame, burnt down candle, fabric scissors.

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

I love anyone who works out of the perceived conventions of what is expected. I have huge admiration for street artists, and political artists, people who put a lot on the line in order to create and share their art. I also love literature and gain a lot of inspiration through reading and writing. I always have loved children's adventure literature and the sense of just ' doing it' that the characters possess. I find that often when I am reading such exciting and free stories, my creative practice in turns frees up and I am somehow able to emulate that childish energy. I also love music. Nothing happens in my life without music,

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Politics, poetry, graffiti, art, literature, how the past escapes us, the possibilities that there is more out there for us to uncover and lose ourselves. Also music. Music has been the making of many fantastic relationships.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

Silversmithing. I would love to get into that in a really intensive way. I think calligraphy and lettering would be a great thing to upskill in too. I would also have loved to've gone along to the creative industries summit that was hosted in Auckland earlier in 2011.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

I get up early to crochet. I make them things they love at Christmas in an attempt to win them over. But, in reality I trash the house, get paint all over everything( I'm talking light switches, tooth brushes, the dishwasher, lounge tiles, wine glasses, door handles, the office chair etc). 'Borrow' things and end up making something out of them, bring home bags and bags of 'stuff,' get fabric scraps everywhere and generally just make a mess. But I have to make. I'm sure you can all understand that. I would be a lot harder to put up with if I wasn't creating and creating a big mess to go with it.

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

Spilling paint/resign/mould mediums. Anything that is liquid and then dries. Some of my best creative insights have been spills.

Kitchen table or studio?

Both and then some!

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

I would really love a DSLR. That would be so helpful when trying to take jewellery photos. I would also hope that life turns out just as everyone always hoped it would. And that my work get recognised and respected within New Zealand, especially my fine jewellery line, I am WoRm- Independent Jewellery .

Thanks for Reading xx
