A Conversation with Nicola of Coulter and Coulter

Gasp ... as I was typing the intro to the interview I had a quick look at Nicola of Coulter and Coulter's shop on Felt ... and saw the most gorgeous new butterfly print created by this super talented wife and husband team.  And that's what you get from Coulter and Coulter - lovely new surprises, divine organic fabrics printed with eco friendly water based printing inks using blocks hand carved from recycled wood with the most lovely inclusion of upcycled items here and there - real homeware with heart.  Here, Nicola delivers us a glimpse into her creative world...

Who is Nicola?

One half of Coulter and Coulter

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

Textile block printing and anything to use up my vast collection of vintage fabrics.

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

My alarm clock - there is just not enough time to do all the things I want to do. A pile of books all ready read and should have gone back to the library a week ago.

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

Where to start - I think my Dad is my main inspiration, he has been doing this whole recycling/up-cycling for ever. Although he is Scottish not a Kiwi, he has a very number 8 wire attitude to life, which has rubbed of on me somewhere along the line. I also have to mention my Mum who had me sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidering from a very young age. There are pictures of me as a tiny tot with my little fully functioning toy sewing machine, busy making clothes for my dolls and the cat. The cat was not greatly impressed.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Anything, where ever the conversation flow takes us.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?
Hmmm, a difficult question. I would love to do them all.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

Juggling, and hoping I am doing it right and also just hoping that I can influence my children like my parents influence me.

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

Way too many to mention. My best ideas come from total screw ups.

Kitchen table or studio?

Kitchen table aspiring to a studio. I have a plan to evenutally convert half the garage into a print room.

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

Yes, do you have three or four days to read them. I have wish lists of things I want to do and see, lists of jobs I should do, lists of things I would like on Etsy and Felt and lists of dreams and plans for the future. The other half of Coulter and Coulter has been heard to mutter “Oh no not another *&!* spreadsheet.”
