A Conversation with Nicola of Lullaby Mobiles

Lullaby Mobiles is about so much more than mobiles alone.  Along with stunning Felt mobiles featuring owls, birds, aeroplanes and more, Nicola also makes key rings, door hangings, toys, hair clips and magnets - and they are gorgeous!  You can learn more about Nicola's creative world here...
Who is Nicola of Lullaby Mobiles?

I am a mother to 2 kids, Asher is 3.5 and Alexander is 15 months and I am a wife to Max. We have been married for almost 7 years. I was born in Cape Town, South Africa and moved to NZ in 2001 and proud to be a NZ citizen!

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

I specialise in nursery mobiles and banners as well as making other handmade accessories. Everything I made is hand stitched!

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

Oh gosh, too much! Hand cream, toothbrush charger, tissue box, two reading books and an unopened Christmas gift with body creams and washes.

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

Music that makes me want to get up and dance, I play it loud when I work! Other handmade small businesses inspire me. My main inspiration comes from what my mother managed to achieve in her short life.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Life, dreams, kids, music, my craft, traveling and “nothings”

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

A photography workshop on how to become a better photographer with my products. A handsewing workshop to correctly learn what I have had to self teach myself and the Auckland Arts and crafts fair so I can be inspired by others!

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

I'm still trying to figure that one out! I mainly work at night and during the day when my kids are at daycare. Sadly the housework gets neglected much to my husbands dismay :-p

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

Is there such a thing? I'm too much of perfectionist to allow screw ups!

Kitchen table or studio?

Dining table! I can only dream of a studio one day :-)

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

To have my own studio, to be a successful small handmade business locally and internationally and to have an assistant!
