A Conversation with Leanne of Little Frienz

Today we share an insight into Leanne from Little Frienz creative world.  Leanne makes super fun and functional childrenswear and accessories including lego crayons, swimming bags, car caddies, dresses, skirts and much more...

Who is Leanne Beale?

Mother to Oliver 5, and Harry 3. Part time teacher and part time sewer – Little Frienz

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

I LOVE to create, ever since I was little, so when my work hours were cut, I decided to start sewing again and therefore started Just Bead It (now Little Frienz). I also always wanted to have a girl, so this is one way to get my girlie fix…lol

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

A box of mixed greeting cards for all occasions, jewellery and The Hunger Games novel.

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

My nana is my number one role model. She used to make ceramics, tissue box holders, fabric picture frames etc. She taught me how to hand sew and make several craft items. My aunt is another role model as she is an AMAZING sewer, so she taught me all the basics and more, along with my sewing teachers at school. I enjoy searching the internet and looking for different fabrics.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Sports – Usually more of a male topic, but was a HUGE part of my life when growing up.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

Handmade in Wellington – creative workshops.

I would like to learn more about the uses of my overlocker

WOW – World of Wearable Arts in Wellington – would love to attempt making something like that one day!

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

I am currently finding it a bit of a struggle with now working 3-4 days a week and having 2 little ones. I also play netball, manage our top club team and take 3-4 year olds for Ripper Rugby every Saturday morning. I usually sew when the kids are asleep in the evenings, or when they are at school/kindy…

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

Just the one…..lol….I have a few!!!

I need to learn to do a sample of new products first out of calico etc, as to not waste fabric.

Kitchen table or studio?

Lounge!! We are currently renovating and adding an extra room on our house, so for now, I have divided the lounge into two separate areas, one of which being a sewing space.

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

I would LOVE to open up my own children’s shop one day in the near future…
