A Conversation with Rick of Nautical Tribe

Inspired and influenced by marine materials and tribal patterning, Rick and Diane of Nautical Tribe, design and create stunning pieces of jewellery that can only be described as fascinating wearable works of art.  Here, Rick shares a glimpse into their creative world....

Who is Nautical Tribe?

Rick Allender  and Diane Brand if you know what I mean. Diane conjures up the designs for our jewellery and I put it all together.

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

Rope and cord and hand tools are what we like dealing with

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

Boating magazines - Wooden Boat, Yachting Monthly and Practical Boat Owner

Who are your
 creative role models?

Diane
music, completely eclectic here
books, Nautical novels, adventure and history

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Sailing

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

Wooden boat building, sailing and seamanship

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

Its not hard when doing what one enjoys

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

We don’t have them – we just add them to the website

Kitchen table or studio?

Workshop and on board Stormbird in the Marlbourgh Sounds is where the work happens

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

To make enough money from Nautical Tribe to fund our latest crazy idea which is to buy or build a trailer yacht and ship it to Europe to slurp around lakes, rivers and canals. This will be over several  seasons in our fast approaching ‘retirement’
