A Conversation with Steph of Owl & Hedgehog

Beautiful designs and fabulous fabrics sourced from around the world feature in Steph of Owl & Hedgehog's funky yet oh so functional babywear, childrenswear and accessories.  Here, she shares a window into her creative world...

Who is Owl and Hedgehog?

Steph Lyford

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

Making functional babies/children’s clothing and accessories

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring) –

50 Shades of Grey & Your Home & Garden Magazine

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

My kids (they ask me to make things for them and with them) and crafty blogs and magazines.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Anything at all if they are like-minded people.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

WOW Wellington (which I am going to with my mum), take a trip to a craft market in Auckland (not sure which one?), otherwise I have no idea what is out there so fingers crossed now I am a friend of NZ Handmade I will find all sorts of cool workshops and creative events that I could attend.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

It’s not an easy one as I have two children aged 4yr and 2yrs, my son is now at Kindergarten four mornings a week however my daughter hangs out at home with me, I try to sew when they are in bed (bearing in mind to spend time with my hubby) or happy playing outside. My mum usually takes them to her place one day a week so I can get stuck in.

What is your favorite creative screw-up?

Swimming robe I made for my son.

Kitchen table or studio?

studio and office (studio is above the shed & office in the house)

I have found it easier to sew in the office while my daughter is still young so have had to squash my husband’s work into the corner :) ).

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

Other than winning lotto (hehe)

Spending more time over the summer away in our caravan enjoying some fine weather.

To grow owl&hedgehog, but keeping it handmade in NZ.

A trip to Sunshine Coast.

Healthy family.

Teaching our kids to swim.

Having more hours in my week to sew as I do love it.
