A Conversation with Lisa of this little design

this little design is a family team creating products to personalise your childs room and hold memories in a fun, fresh way.  Lisa designs and decoratively paints the glory boxes, children's furniture and bedroom decor that dad, Tony, builds.  Here Lisa shares and insight into her creative world....

Who is this little design?

“this little design” is made up of me (Lisa) and my Dad (Tony)

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

We design, build and artistically paint wooden Glory Boxes and other children’s furniture and bedroom décor, this includes, Height Charts, Wall Hooks, Hair Tie / Clip Holders and Drawer Knobs.

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring);

It’s pretty boring and unoriginal………A bunch of photo frames with photos of my kids and family in.  A pile of books and paper work – waiting to be read and sorted through!  My children’s Record Books – waiting to be updated and put back in their Glory Boxes!  A small Japanese paper tray with a few pieces of jewelry, my watch and my glasses in.  The “traditional” bedside clock/radio and a lamp.

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

I find browsing the internet and “pinterest” very inspiring and walking through funky shops and retail outlets very stimulating.  While thinking and drawing up my own designs and actually creating them, I love listening to great music that I can sing along to or dance along to.  I love music that reminds me of summertime, the beach and sitting outside with the wind in my hair – i.e. music from Jack Johnson, G. Love, Matt Costa, Donavon Frankenreiter, Dave Matthews, Phil Edwards, John Butler Trio, John Mayer,  Mumford & Sons, Counting Crows, Black Seeds, Rhombus, The Great NZ Songbook and any other NZ band or singer.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Travelling, family and friends, our history together, memories, dreams and goals, the future.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

Anything to do with photography, or anything homemade or handmade.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

My family and two young kids come first, playing with them, having fun, going out and experiencing the world and whenever they’re in bed asleep I spread my spare time between chill’n out with my husband and doing things with him and going in to the shed to paint or do creative projects, or opening up my laptop to go on the internet and work.

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

A pinboard I made for one of my children, now that it’s got stuff pinned to it, it looks pretty cool.

Kitchen table or studio?

Both! Plus my desk in the corner of the dining room!

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

Absolutely, have got a wish list…….but there’s far too much on it to write it all down here!  Have got so many goals and dreams and ideas and thoughts and things that I want to do!  My motto is……”Love life – the glass is ALWAYS half full no matter what life throws at you, all things happen for a reason.”
