A Conversation with Fleur of Paper Seams

With a desire to create boutique paper goods for home sewers, Fleur of Paper Seams has designed and made beautifully finished cards, notebooks, journals and a super useful seamstress workbook.  Here Fleur shares a glimpse into her creative world...

Who is Paper Seams?

Paper Seams is a little boutique that is passionate about handmade. As a home sewist myself, I create workbooks for those who love to handcraft.

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

First and foremost sewing would have to be my groove. Recently I’ve enjoyed a bit of self-taught book binding and graphic design but the passion of creating something pretty from gorgeous fabrics is something I can’t seem to get enough of.

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

Umm, here goes… a baby monitor and an alarm clock (which kind of function as one in the same!). Stack of unread books and magazines (haha, mostly weight watchers magazines!). Random objects; pens, hair clips and a shepherds whistle and probably a bit of dust!

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

Ashley Hackshaw, from Lil Blue Boo, is a creative genius and someone who I have great admiration for. There are so many other Mumma’s out there creating amazing things with their time and talents which continue to amaze and inspire me. Nature also plays a part along with images of historical sewing patterns and publications.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Becoming and being a Mummy and all that it means and brings.

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

Great question, I’ll have to start looking into this. I’d love to learn how to screen-print, that is next on my list.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

Ahh, this is the ultimate conundrum. When I have an answer I’ll let you know.

What is your favourite creative screw-up?
A cotton skirt with two neat little pleats. A self-drafted pattern that eventuated to have pleats in it after over-calculating for my post-baby circumference.

Kitchen table or studio?

Both, I am fortunate to now have an old kitchen table (from trademe) in my ‘studio’ (spare room)

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

I always have a wish list. There are many things both material and non-material/experiential on my list, particularly the wish to achieve harmony of family/life commitments with creative life. Oh, and of course the Bernina 550QE sewing machine :)
