A Conversation with Debbie of Heatherbels

Debbie of Heatherbels is a passionate crafter enjoying different mediums - she currently makes merino beanies, sock monkeys and hair accessories and here she shares with us her inspirations and a glimpse into her creative world...
Who is Debbie of Heatherbels?

I’m a mother of two beautiful girls one 14 yrs and the other 8yrs old.  I have always enjoyed crafting.  Heatherbels along with 2 sisters and 1 brother-in-law started with local markets, just wanting to meet people and show people what we can do.  One sister sews (Heatherbel is her middle name), another sister knits toys, my brother-in-law makes wooden dolls cradles, stools, block trolleys etc, and I make the Merino beanies, hair accessories, sock monkeys etc

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

I have a real fetish for socks, hence sock monkeys…and I love watching childrens eyes light up when the spot something different.  And I love knitting childrens beanies

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

Several Nora Roberts books, watch, lip balm (Emu oil), dust
J

Who are your creative role models?

What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire? My husband calls me a magpie and I love anything sparkly,  I love visiting local markets – they inspire me

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

My children, travelling (once I win lotto) creative ideas

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

I would love to learn to paint,  dress-making – both my sisters are dressmakers, my sewing is not at that level

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

It can be pretty hard, I have just started working full time again after a 12 year break.  I work in the evenings and weekends, I have currently about 8 items on the go at the moment

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

I thought I could paint (just didn’t work out, hence I would love art lessons)

Kitchen table or studio?

I would love a studio (maybe when lotto happens) a bit of Kitchen table and also spare room

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?

A house with 5 bedrooms, so that I can spread out more or a studio.  A new sewing machine.  Lots of spare time.  Lotto.
