A Conversation with Sonia of Creative Aertz

What funky and fabulous items Sonia of Creative Aertz makes!  With a passion for handknitting and creations ranging from liquorice allsort tea cosies, to shark hats, to kiwifruit beanies, there is truly something for everyone here, and the colour combinations are divine!  Read on as Sonia shares an insight into her creative world...

Who is Sonia Foster?

I am Sonia Foster of Creative Aertz and I am located in a small rural township in the Waikato. I am a Mum to my gorgeous 6 year old son Zac and 3 year old daughter Esme. I have been a stay at home Mum and developed Creative Aertz as an outlet for my creative needs and a little bit of sanity.

What’s your “handmade groove ?”

I LOVE handknitting and have designed a great range of children’s hats, baby wear and dolls clothing with a little bit of added “funk” appeal. I also dabble in a bit of sewing and love making my bunnies.

What’s on your bedside table right now? (hey, no tidying up or censoring)

Good Health Magazine and the Healthy Eating Guide – both untouched – another New Years resolution down the gurgler.

Who are your creative role models? What music, books, images, poetry spark your creative fire?

My late Mum taught me everything I know about knitting and sewing. I just love the vibrant colours in kids books and get lots of inspiration from watching the kids movies with them as well as being out and about, for example my acorn hat was inspired by a simple acorn on the ground.

What could you talk late into the night about with like minded people?

Anything and everything – its hard to keep me quiet!

If you could go to three free workshops/creative events this year which ones would they be? What are they about?

I would love to go to a proper pattern /dressmaking workshop, an internet business mentoring workshop and most definitely a patchwork class.

How do you balance your creative life with your family, life commitments?

It is difficult but I love structure and routine so as long as I can keep up with everything, everyone is happy. I am starting a part time job shortly so that will definitely test my balancing skills.

What is your favourite creative screw-up?

Perhaps not a creative screw-up but more of a machinery whoopsie – I had just purchased my brand new rather expensive sewing machine and set it up looking all sparkly and beautiful in my little studio when hubby got the double kayak down from its place in the roof only to smash onto my machine obliterating it into many pieces – it wasn’t funny at the time but remembering hubby’s face is priceless!

Kitchen table or studio?

Kitchen table, small studio and couch and car when hubby is driving!

Do you have a wish list? Can you tell us what’s on it?
  1. To have my own website.
  2. To one day have a proper studio/shop.
  3. Business Laptop.
  4. Most importantly, save up my craft money for another wonderful family holiday.
